"I‘ll definitely be buying a unit
of my own".

Tim from Geekzone

The Sentry Lite has recently been reviewed by Geekzone and it impressed reviewer Tim who wrote "I‘ll definitely be buying a unit of my own".

In the rundown test he did, with two people using the internet connection including some streaming over wired connections, the Sentry Lite lasted over five hours. Read the full review here.

Constant Vigil, a New Zealand company has developed Sentry Lite, a small low cost battery backup that provides power for up to two ISP provided devices in the event of a power outage.

As more and more homes and businesses use fibre broadband, the greater the risk of power outages affecting your internet connection and VoIP phones.

The answer is Sentry Lite which maintains power supply for internet, Voice-Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services and in-home security for up to six hours of power outage. The unit is small – the same size as a bar of soap!
Better connectivity provides access to cloud based software and other benefits like high definition video streaming but these are ineffective if there’s no power.

Constant Vigil has worked with New Zealand telecommunication and ISP companies to develop and test the product.

The Sentry Lite Unit is has been specifically designed to suit quick and easy residential deployment. And has undergone considerable product testing in Christchurch where infrastructure improvements following the earthquakes continue to cause disruption and the fear of further natural disasters (and resulting power outages) in always on the minds of residents.

More About Sentry Lite Common Voltage

The current Sentry Lite model has been designed to use a separate, standard, readily available lead-acid battery. A new model is also under development with an integrated lithium battery with end user swap-out capability.

Extended battery life
Sentry Lite models tested with standard residential ONT/Router equipment from a number of separate ISPs have seen outage support in excess of six hours when using a standard 7Ah type battery.

The Sentry Lite Unit incorporates smart battery charging circuitry which charges any connected 12V lead-acid battery. This also allows the use of larger capacity batteries should outage support beyond six hours be deemed necessary.

Unlike other solutions, the Sentry Lite uses buck-boost technology to ensure output voltages remains within specification even if the input supply is lower than the actual output voltage.

Integrated smart battery charging ensures optimum charging, eliminates the risk of over-charging, and prolongs battery life. Batteries are estimated to be operational for in excess of 3 years with the Sentry Lite Unit.

The Sentry Lite also supports solar cell connection as an alternative to mains power for low power systems.

One instead of two
The Sentry Lite also replaces the two power packs currently necessary with the ONT and router devices. This provides a more aesthetic installation and support for both devices.

Accessories included
All cables and replacement power pack are provided within the kit. Power connections custom designed to individual IPS equipment designs area also available.

Full replacement
The Sentry Lite product is designed and manufactured in New Zealand to ISO9001 quality levels. Constant Vigil currently offer a 2 year full replacement guarantee on the Sentry Lite unit, not including the battery.

Internet Providers aren't currently able to provide a technical solution Talk to most providers and the answer will be a resounding ‘NO!”. Most will suggest installation of a costly Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) whilst others may suggest you use an inferior ADSL product which sort of defeats the object of the move to higher speed broadband right?

Why worry? A little bit of technical stuff now (sorry!)
Older analogue phone technology was supplied with power through the phone wires from the communications company. A power outage at the home did not necessarily affect operation of the phone service. Fibre-optic cable, whilst great for high speed data, is unable to carry electrical power and it is the home owners’ responsibility to provide this power once the transition is made to Ultra-Fast Broadband (UFB).

Fully Tested
The Sentry Lite Unit has already been fully tested within Snap (Huawei and Fritz!Box 7340/7390) and Orcon (Genius) installations and it is the ideal solution for those moving to higher speed broadband solutions where power supply is critical or indeed intermittent. Rural installations, susceptible to random power outages, can see some significant performance improvement when used in conjunction with the Sentry Lite Unit.

Unlike other solutions, the Sentry Lite Unit uses buck-boost technology and ensures the output voltage remain within specification even as the input supply is lower than the actual output voltage. For applications where short duration power supply issues or brown-outs are experienced, the Sentry Lite Integrated is an ideal solution, typically providing 1-2 hours of support time.

Where do I get more information?
The Sentry Lite can be customised to suit individual ISP or network equipment.  Being a DC based system, it will work just as effectively in other countries. Contact our support team with any questions.....we’re only too happy to assist you.

Installation Diagram

The Common Output model is suitable for the majority of installations where devices operate at the same voltage, typically 12V and indeed this model is well suited to the current Orcon (Genius) and Snap (Fritz!box and Hauwei) fibre installations, as well as numerous others, here in New Zealand and worldwide. The Common Output model is however ideal as a battery backup/electricity supply stabilisation for any existing low-power gateway, switch or hub.
